Programs, excursions and trips

AFFA has a stimulating variety of events that include expert speakers, exhibitions, folk artist demos and hands-on activities, a holiday party with silent auction, excursions, and longer trips in the U.S. and abroad.

Where else can you...

have an expert identify the origin, materials and probable value of some piece of folk art you happen to have.

watch Mexican potter Demetrio Aguilar create stunning clay figures while telling folk tales like how the marigold got its smell.

see one-of-a-kind folk art collections in private homes.

tour yard shrines and outsider art environments.

attend lectures by famous folk art experts, such as Dr. Marion Oettinger of the San Antonio Museum of Art.

see demonstrations by tile artists, furniture makers, chain saw sculptors, saddle makers, potters and glass blowers in Central Texas.

meet more than 50 Mexican folk artists--some renowned, some just emerging--all gathered in one place to sell their art with nobody charging them a commission.

build a Day of the Dead altar.

feel the exhilaration of a pulse-pounding Brazilian capoeira demonstration.

learn to shoot a blow gun from the Amazon region.

Our funds are designated for

routine programs, such as those just listed.

grants and donations to promote folk art in the larger community.

visionary funds for unusual and significant undertakings, such as bringing well-known artists or experts to Austin, sponsoring seminars, partnering with other organizations to underwrite special exhibits, or giving institutions items that would become permanent additions to the preservation of a culture.
